Frozen water pipes can leave you without water in the worst weather conditions and cost a lot to repair.
Tips To Avoid Frozen Pipes This Winter
Before the Cold Weather Sets In:
- Check your sprinkler or irrigation systems. Make sure everything is off and drained.
- Eliminate sources of cold air near water lines. Repair drafty windows. Block/cover drafts around doors or install new door/window weather strips.
- Know where your main water shutoff valve is located and how to shut off water.
- Protect your pipes. (Wrap them in insulation)
When Temps Hover Around/Stay Below Freezing:
- Open the doors to cabinets or vanities that have water pipes to let warm air flow in.
- Leaving a few faucets running/dripping slightly will relieve pressure inside the pipes and help prevent a rupture/leak. A trickle of water can prevent ice from forming inside your pipes.
If Pipes do Freeze:
- Shut off the water in your home immediately.
- Try to thaw pipes with warm air using a hair dryer or space heater. (Do not leave space heaters unattended and do not use any types of open flames)
- Careful when turning your water back on. Once pipes are thawed, slowly turn the water back on and check for cracks/leaks.
- If you are unable to access or safely thaw the frozen pipe, call a licensed plumber right away.
Things to Remember:
- Turn up the heat and Keep a consistent temperature in your home.
- Open vanity or cabinet doors so warm air can reach under sinks.
- If you have exposed pipes inside closets or pantries, leave doors open.
- Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor faucets.
- Let warm water drip overnight when temperatures are cold, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall.
- Insulate your pipes and Seal any air leaks.
- If you will be away from home during freezing weather, ensure your thermostat is set to at least 55°F.
